I'm doing a guided hunt for moose a couple hours south of Fairbanks. It's the second and third week of September. Supposed to be a dry hunt as far as terrain goes i.e. no swamps. But I'm wondering if insulated boots would be needed that time of year. I'm guessing most of the day is going to be spent glassing. Looking for opinions on a good boot for this scenario.

If i have room I usually bring two pars of boots moose hunting. An insulated rubber boot and my hiking boots. Even in dry areas it seems one is always getting wet. I would definitely recommend insulated boots for mid-late September.

I don’t run insulated up here for moose for my everyday boot, my feet tend to run hot so that’s just me. I would second bringing two pairs of boots too. You never know when it will decide to rain the entire hunt. An uninsulated pair for everyday (Gore-Tex something or another) and a set of insulated Muck Boots or extra tuffs for when it’s cold rainy and miserable out. I like boots with plenty of ankle support, the tussocks up here are ridiculous.

I hunt one mountain range south of where it sounds like you are planning on going and I’ve run into temperatures from 20-75 with blizzards, blue sky days and crazy weeks long rain. My in laws hunt the north side of the Alaska range (where you’ll be) and they get the same weather crazies. Snowed up there on my buddy a couple times this year.

I spend the entire season in Xtratuffs and waders but its probably more wet where I am than up in fairbanks. I was thinking of trying those new Crispi boots that have the built in gaiter thing, seems like that could possibly be the best of both worlds, an actual boot with ankle support and some weather protection.
