I recently finished Training for the uphill athlete, after a recommendation on the forum. Very happy I did, and am currently applying what I learned.

American Buffalo, one of my most favorite books. I see it’s been mentioned several times for good reason.

The classic, The most dangerous game, by Richard Connell.

Finally it’s a bit niche, but I have been on a submarine history kick this last year. Blind Man’s Bluff, by Sontag and Drew recounts some very very interesting stories about the early days of submarine warfare. I could not put it down. Talk about hard men doing a hard job.

I just finished Washington by Ron Chernow. A great biography and it was interesting to learn about our first President’s experiences & perspective of historical events that occurred in his life time! Definitely recommend but it is lengthy!

I’m now on the Civil War of 1812 by Alan Taylor!

In his days after The French & Indian War yet before the American Revolution, George Washington was a pretty frequent fox hunter! I think he’d go almost once a week!

If you have spent any time in northern Virginia, like Fauquier county where I grew up, you'd see that fox hunting was a major thing. The grandfather of a good friend of ours hunted fox with George Patton!

For folks who have long drives, I'd highly recommend the Patrick O'Brien Aubrey & Maturin series narrated by Patrick Tull. I come back to some of the books again and again. Among the first five, I'd skip "Post Captain," but would otherwise recommend them without hesitation. There are more than 20 in all, so you'll be able to get to and from those waypoints easily.

"The Gunfighters" by Bryan Burrough. I always thought most the of supposed gunfighting in the old west was mostly fictional, Hollywood and Gunsmoke BS. This book moves fast and gives great backstories about gunfighters. I really enjoy Western US history, but had never read anything about gunfighters and found this well worth the time.

• Shadows on the Koyukuk by Sidney Huntington/Jim Rearden – collection of Alaska hunting and trapping tales from the early-mid 1900s
• Island of the Lost by Joan Druett – mid-1800s shipwreck survival tale in the Auckland Islands

Just recently finished reading Undaunted Courage and Death in the Long Grass. Both were very good reads.

Currently working my way through Emily Wilson’s translation of The Odyssey by Homer.

If you do the audiobooks, the Fagles translation of the Iliad narrated by Derek Jacobi is terrific. I’ve read it several times, but hearing it spoken is a totally different experience (and how, historically, it’s actually meant to be enjoyed).
