Empire of the Summer Moon was fantastic and very educational for me. It cronicles the rise and end of the Comanches, the last horse tribes of the southern plains. S.C. Gwynne did such a great job that I also picked up and am nearly done with his book Rebel Yell, a very good read about Stonewall Jackson.
I can't say enough good about these books as they opened my eyes to history that I never knew; I'm a product of the public school system you know.
I also enjoyed a Tough Trip Through Paradise 1878-1879. An account of Andrew Garcia's adventure in the Musselshell country. Again, more awesome history for me.
Death in the Longrass is very entertaining and lead me to read a lot of books on African hunting in the early 20th century.

Being from Iowa my whole life, I didn't know shit about the Civil War or really anything about the "South". Rebel Yell was eye opening to say the least.Rebel Yell was great. Jackson was not the person most want to paint him as. I personally think he had Asperger’s syndrome. One of the more complex people our country has produced.

Turns out I caught a 56 lb bluecat in the James River literally a stone's throw from where McClellan retreated to during the Seven Days battles; Harrison's Landing.
