I’m looking for some recommendations for a book or two to take on a backcountry hunt where the Alaska weather could have us trapped in a tent for a few days. But let me say, I’m not a book reader. I need something easy to read and fast paced that keeps you engaged. The only books I’ve read in the past were children’s books to my kids and now grandkids.

Red Rising or Dune if into Sci-Fi, Shogun if into ninjas and samurai, lonesome dove or dances with wolves for westerns, It for horror, Empire of the summer moon or killers of the flower moon for western history

Two of my favorite easy to read and engaging books are Alas, Babylon by Pat Frank, and Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham. Both are post apocalyptic books written in the 1950's. The Frank book is about nuclear war and Triffids is about bio-engineering gone wrong with some sci fi. My dad is a hard ass rancher who doesn't like to read and isn't good at it. He liked both a lot. I can usually get him to read a book every year or so. If you want something less story like, The Founding Fish by John McPhee would be good, interesting as hell, and has no right to be as great as it is.

When my dad did a dalls hunt, he got snowed up in a bivy sack for 3 straight days. He spent the entire time playing solitare on his chest. Yeah, bring a book or two.

Louis lamour is worth a look, haunted mesa is a good fun one to start with if you're into westerns but there's lots.

Monkeywrench gang is potentially worth a look if you're feeling a little chaos and anarchy

I found girl with the dragon tattoo series fast paced and nearly addictive if you're into thrillers/crime

Patrick McManus is solid for short storiesand belly laughs especially if you've got a buddy and don't mind taking turns reading out loud.

Ridgeline
It's historical fiction because it has conversations and thoughts that are made up but every event is real history. It's about when Crazy Horse first started fighting the US calvary as a young man. The point of view switches between him and a couple of the officers and one of their wives. Really well done

The Moscow Rules
CIA Chief of Disguises memoir of the crazy things they did to operate in Moscow during the 80s. I really enjoyed it

Endurance
Edward Shackleton's expedition to the south pole. Ship was crushed in the ice and they survived multiple years trying to get back to civilization

Into the Silence
I highly recommend this one. About the 1920s expeditions to try and get to the top of Everest. Interesting people and time

Stormship troopers is a great light read if you don’t have a great attention span, it’s really good and it moves quickly. Louis Lamour is good too.

Jack O’Connor’s Big Game Rifle
