Bone in or bone out game bags

I'm doing my first back pack hunt this year for elk. I have been trying to decide whether I should just use my caribou meat on bone bags, or just purchase Argali high country bone out game bags for this hunt.

I love the caribou bags especially when im not more than 1 or 2 miles from the truck. With the meat being on the bone I can just take it straight to a processor. Biggest down side is they are heavy 1lb 3oz and don't pack down very well. Probaly not the best option packing camp in or hunting with camp on my back. But do like putting the qaurters directly in the bag after I get it off the carcass when the flies and bees are swarming me.

The argali high country game bags seem like a solid lightweight option weighing only 9 oz, but don't have the option of keeping the bone in.

So if planning to debone your meat and don't have the option of putting the meat in bags until you can bone it out, what do you do? Just let the flies and bees have thier way with it until you can debone it and put it in bags?

If I debone the meat a processor won't touch it, I perfer to just have them do it, but know how if i have to do it. But depending on where I drop a bull I might have to debone it.

Definite pros and cons to both.

It's minimal ounces for bone in bags. You then have the option to haul the meat any way you want. If you are overly concerned about the few extra ounces, take less socks. Or, do as I do and poop the morning before my hike in 😂

i use both. bone in meat bags for the quarters and ribs (alaska requirement) and smaller kuiu bags for backstraps/tenderloins and neck meat.
I do something similar, but the front shoulders aren’t worth the bone in either. Add those to the bone out pile! Front shoulder take up a lot of room (volume) and the bone to meat ratio is high.

Pro tip… it’s a lot easier to bone them out if they’re hanging.

I know over thinking it to death, I spent stupid amount of time on pack wizard trying cut any weight any way I can. I've got another post and a vast majority of people bashed the game bags. Weight weenies? I haven't started back packing yet so I can't technically call myself a weight weenie. Yet.

I’ve run caribou MOBs. They’re great. If you’ve already got those, I wouldn’t worry about it

Agree on the front shoulders, most grind meat imo. Good point. If you can't get the meat In bone out bags until you bone it out, just let the millions of flies have thier way with it until you can bone it out? Later in the season obviously not an issue. I've only ever used the bone in bags, and I put it the bag asap

Typically keep meat on bone as easier to haul out. Have used the VIAM bags over past couple years and they are bone in and wash out very easily. Little Oxiclean and hot water then handwash and they are good to go. Very impressed.

I always bone out in the field. Doesn't really take very long. But I don't make bone broth like I know some do and states like Alaska require it. Not a huge weight difference in the two bags though, so if you want the option just take the Caribou bags.
