Bobcat Safe 22-250

Following this as I have spent weeks trying to decide. 22-250 just seems like it would be way too much. Probably going to go with a .223 for flexibility versus a rimfire/.204.
- enough without being way too much and destroying the pelt.

17 hmr did the job for me on this little female.

Also worked well for a coyote last weekend. This is the second one I’ve killed with the hmr and both folded.

Maybe try that Hornady 35gr NTX loading @4000fps, if going for a Bobcat with a .223 Rem?

I would just say try not to hit them in the spine or shoulders as the bone-shrapnel can make some big ugly holes in the hide.

Which model of .17 HMR is this? Or did you like have a common one like a Savage 93R17 and put it in an aftermarket stock maybe? Look nice and I LOVE cheek risers, and I eventually want to get another .17 HMR some day, so if I go out with my son we can opt to both have that cartridge in the field when out together.

Congrats on filling that cat tag!

Was coming here to recommend a shotgun or 17. That cat looks prime for a mount.

Im not OP but those look like CZ 457s to me.

I have two of them in .22lr. Would buy another in a heartbeat if I needed another rimfire.

It’s a cz457 - I actually put it into a Boyd’s pro varmint after I shot the cat so it’s the same rifle in both. I love that little rifle

Obviously they worked…but how was the performance of the 17gr?

She ran about 10 yards and fell over. Shot her quartering to me hard and basically went in her arm pit and angled back. Entry was bigger than I hoped - probably half dollar sized but no exit.

I’ve killed a few coyotes with it as well and both dropped. One I shot frontal and put right in his chest and the last one was broadside. Granted both were under 50 yards.

I’ve shot a few coons with it and I will say for coons I’m less than impressed. Those tough bastards just eat them up. I’ll probably be moving to a 22 mag for them. But the 17 will stay my bobcat gun.

Right on! I just picked up a 17 for dealing with predators trying to get my chickens. My thought was a 17 will be a little more palatable for the neighbors in the middle of the night than a bigger centerfire… all of my shots will be less than 50 yds. I was torn between the 17gr vmax and 20gr xtp.

I kind of went about it backwards, but just the way it happened, and wanted to share my results. I drew my first Illinois bobcat permit and have been making a pretty good effort at it the last 6 weeks. I’d been carrying my .17hmr most the time to try and avoid pelt damage. I happen to call in a pair of coyotes with my daughter one morning and connected on one. It was an 80 yard broadside shot, and actually exited. It went through both lungs. The coyote ran about another 80 and piled up. I was shooting cci a17 17gr tipped.
Couple weeks later I finally got a bobcat called in and shot it with a 22-250 50gr vmax. It was a 70 yard quartering to shot. I hit it on the front right shoulder and the bullet never existed and a very small entry.
Probably would have been better to flip them around but worked out.
