1/2” too close on the last pass next to the porch.

Always the end of the day too…

You remind me of my father inlaw. Hit his own house 3 times in the last 2 years, and yet doesnt understand why I dont trust him around equipment.....
 
This is almost certainly a seat issue, not a fitting issue. Clean the seat thoroughly, inspect for damage, and if it's compromised, try a self-tapping zerk or use a seat reamer. If you've been cranking fittings down hard, you may have already deformed the seat, back off, clean it, and start fresh.

And before you do any of that, make sure the track isn't already too tight. If the piston is bottomed out, you're fighting a losing battle.
