Anyone have personal experience with a boat based Alaskan mountain goat hunt? Late season.

I heard a bunch of things: All 2nd hand information.
The boat can get in rough seas, like on the king crab TV shows.
Can't sleep if the seas are rough.
Going from sea level to shooting distance can be an ice climb. and out right dangerous.
The goats run uphill once they see a boat.

I'm really looking for 1st hand experience. Someone who has actually done it.

I've guided boat based goat hunts for quite a few years. They are not all created equally, but much of what you heard is false. I will speak to my experiences.

If the sea's are rough as in the deadliest catch, you won't be going anywhere. The boat is just used to transit to and from the hunting area, not to actually hunt from. Our hunters are flown in to where the yacht is anchored, and sometimes won't ever even travel on the big boat.

The actual hunting is done from skiffs.

The boat will never be anchored anywhere to the point you can't sleep. At least with our outfit.

While goat hunting is inherently dangerous, you won't be ice climbing anywhere. Shots are often from the beach, with no climb involved.

Late season goat hunts while they are rutting, the goats tend to come down chasing nannies.

Again, all boat hunts are not created equal. My experience is with a high end, cushy, yacht based operation.
