The type or breed of dog really doesn't matter much, they can all smell good enough to trail game. They can all be trained to look for something. Hunt drive is what is important in a tracking dog. You need a dog that won't quit until they find what they are looking for.

As working dogs of all types have been bred for hunt/prey drive they generally will have more than regular dogs.

And you don’t need a “quality” bow, rifle or backpack they all can get the job done. Yes they all can. But some are better bred for it than others

Great, Use him in my years as a tracker I’ve seen every breed from cur to Dalmatian do good work. Just instinct and breed design (ear shape) has a big influence on good and great. I’m one of the founding members of Texas blood trackers association and have 3 ubt certified dogs. And sometimes some breeds still surprise me. Keep on tracking and good hunting sir.

Yeah, I'm not saying they're ideal. They won't bay. They tend to track like they bird hunt, going out a few hundred yards and circling back. We can run off leash in Mississippi so you get to see those little quirks. From what I've seen around where I live the Catahoulas and BMCs are the way to go, followed closely by bird dogs. I even track with my German Shepherd but she has her quirks too. I know several that track on lead with Dachshunds and do a great job as well. But I do agree, some breeds are more adapted to trailing than others for sure.
