Can't get in to the BLM.gov site (might be blocked at work although I can't imagine why) to check for myself.

Are there maps available from 1976 that would show BLM blocks?
Does the BLM change over time or would what was in BLM in 76 still be BLM?

Trying to find a place we camped when I was a kid.
Dad can't remember exactly where it was but I have it narrowed down to the general area.
I have spent hours looking at maps, online historic USGS topo maps, etc. to the point I have about given up finding it

He could be wrong on where it is I guess (he will be 78 later this year)

He mentioned he would like to see the place again and if I can find it I would plan a trip for next summer

Land ownership doesn’t change much between BLM, state, private or other - if it was BLM in 1975 it probably still is. The local BLM office near there would have 1:100,000 maps of the area showing roads, topography and land ownership. If you know the name of the 1,100,000 map, many are are available used on eBay.

Thank you
I have looked at Google Earth, OnX, Huntstand, Spartan Forge, USGS, etc until I am about cross eyed.

May get lucky and stumble on to the place but pretty much to the point of having exhausted all I can come up with

If the BLM ownership has not changed it has either changed so much over time that the place is gone or he was mistaken about it being BLM

Depending how big your 'general area' is, I might suggest calling the local BLM Field Office that manages that area and ask to speak with their Realty Specialist. They would be able to check any Township/Range/Section parcel for any record of an exchange or purchase. As mentioned above, if it was BLM back then it likely still is. However, land exchanges and other transfers do occur.

Also, for what it's worth, like most staff they are probably swamped. The connection of a friendly phone call might go farther than an email request that will never make it to the top of their priority list.

Thanks for all of the help

Found the spot I have been looking for.
Still interested in the maps but turned out place was not where dad thought it was

Going to give them this week and then call.
HydeParkHunter I bet you are right about them being understaffed and swamped with work

Update

My email was forwarded and I received a reply

Here is the content of that email in case someone has a need for the same kind of information

The BLM Utah Public Room forwarded your e-mail to me.

The Department of the Interior publishes an annual report, "Public Land Statistics." These reports include the official acreage figures for our public lands. You can find the 1975 edition here:
https://archive.org/details/publiclandstatis1975unit/page/n3/mode/2up

Table 10 on page 32 gives the "Public lands under exclusive jurisdiction of the Bureau of Land Management, 1975."
The Utah total was 22,641,037 acres.

The most recent Public Land Statistics report is from 2022. You can find it here:
https://www.blm.gov/sites/default/files/docs/2023-07/Public_Lands_Statistics_2022.pdf

See Table 1-4 on page 12.
The Utah total was 22,759,263 acres.

With regard to maps, I am also sending this e-mail to the head of our cadastral survey. I have been told that they have an archive of maps from circa 1975. I don't believe these are statewide maps, so you ought to reply all on this e-mail and tell us where your area of interest is, for example what county?

I didn’t expect them to actually have a 1975 map! How cool is that. Amazing really.
