Blaser R8 Ultimate w/ATZL Trigger

Well, the J Sip barrel was a total bust. You cannot properly close the bolt with it…..the bolt ends up getting stuck and has to be torqued open. I never fired it for fear of the pressure of firing it would lock it in place permanently. Totally unusable. It must be out of dimension or something.

I’m going to send it back and give the guy a chance to redo it correctly.

That sucks. Also shows a lack of QC as they should of tested it in house on a R8 platform for function before sending it out.

What cartridge is it?

I guess he has a new heat treatment that hardens the steel. Apparently, he did this treatment before shopping it. It may be something easily fixed…..we’ll see.

Is this a barrel adapter or full barrel? I may try an Akila adapter as I've heard several people that have had good luck with them. But I've been very reluctant to do any 3rd party barrels just for safety reasons so far.

Full barrel.

Omicron has had great luck with J Sip apparently.

So far, I have not. We’ll see if they can sort this out or not.

Picked up a Blaser 6mm BR Norma barrel. I’m still breaking it in but it shoots lights out!

The lower two shots are called flyers. 10 shots,.77 inches doesn’t suck!

I let the barrel cool and shot a half MOA training paper 5 times in a row.

The point? The Blaser factory barrels seem to lack nothing. Yeah, caliber options are limited (with useful twist rates at least) but 6 XC, 6.5 Creed and 6.5 PRC are available. That covers a lot. 7 and 300 PRC are coming if you want something heavier.

Help me build one of these.........euro rifles traditionally have long LOP, are blaser pretty long? I'm average height but thick chested, I order my stocks ar a 13" LOP. Can a blaser thumb hole be shortened?

These guys do blaser stocks, and you can get a custom LOP. I'd likely source an akila integral Pic barrel extension, and bolt, have my smith fit it. My smith brought cnc in house at AI 11 years ago. He a hell of a machinist. I know he'd figure it out and wouldn't ship it to me until perfect.

Carbonomix will not ship to the United States, I asked.

The LOP is “long” on the R8 Ultimate stock I have. I think it’s like 14.5 inches or something going from memory. However, I’m not sure that translates the same as it would on a traditional bolt action. Remember, the bolt is sitting directly on top of the magazine which is directly on top of the trigger.

For example, my R8 with an 18 inch barrel is maybe 1/2 an inch longer (overall) than a Springfield Armory Redline I have with a 16.5 inch barrel. The redline has a way more compact stock with a 13.5 inch LOP as well as a shorter barrel.

I can tell you, and this has been echoed by other users, the R8 thumb hole stocks are the best fitting rifle stocks I have ever touched. They are subtly contoured in a way that isn’t conveyed in photos. Literally, they fit like a glove. I actually shoot much more consistently with this rifle than with any other I have.

Now, if you’re still worried about the LOP….Blaser makes an adjustable but pad. I haven’t yet felt the need to try it but you certainly could. I imagine you could probably make all kinds of LOP adjustments with it. It’s only available on the Ultimate stock though.

I started out like you, looking at all the aftermarket stuff and picturing how I thought I would want the rifle. In the end, the Blaser stuff is so damn good you really don’t need the aftermarket gear. If I were you, I would get an ultimate stock, .308 bolt face, ATZL trigger if you can, a standard weight barrel cut to 18-20 inches (they will do it for you) and threaded 5/8 x24. I would go 6 XC, 6.5 Creed or maybe .308 if you want a bigger caliber. The Blaser saddle mounting system is absolute magic so don’t waste your time with pic rails etc.

The carrying case is worth it too by the way.

I have like 20 rifles, most of them customs, the R8 is the only thing I have been shooting since I got it. It’s really that good.

When I took the high gloss finish off my Jaeger stock, I added a recoil pad and took the LOP down to 14.

On the Pro Success stock that is plastic I don't think there is much (anything) in the butt of it. In theory it could be shortened if you are not doing the recoil inserts, etc. and it doesn't have the adjustable bits I'd suspect. I'd just suggest trying to contact a good Blaser dealer and asking them.

For LOP I don't have particularly long arms, but find it works fine. One thing to keep in mind is to make sure you have clearance for the bolt when you are running it. I'd be concerned if you shortened the stock a lot that the end of the bolt may want to hit your nose when you run it.

I’ve bought four from him with great success. Others not so much.

Waiting on custom proof barrel from evolved ballistics. Another good option but I’ve been waiting several months at this point.
How did the evolved ballistics project go?

I have Akila Bear project in the works. I’m curious how that worked for you?
