Blacktail Wa?

Anybody hunted BT with a lever gun?

Looking to get into BT hunting and really need an excuse to buy a lever gun...normally I'm a Muley guy and the .308 is definitely not set-up for jungle hunting.

a 308 is a great blacktail cartridge, unless it's a big heavy long range rig or something. i have a friend who uses a 30-30 with a leupold scout scope on it, he kills the heck out of bucks with it (and big spring bears every year) it's not a handicap to him.

not all BT are killed at spitting distance though, you have lots of opportunity in clearcuts and even big 2nd growth timber you can see a ways in

While I usually carry a scoped rifle for the occasional longer shot, I can tell you that a lever gun would have been ideal for 80% of the blacktail I've taken. If I ever go back to rifle hunting for them it will be with a 30-30.

Got lucky on a healthy young buck. With the last few days of late archery looming over me I managed to get within 25 yards of this guy.

The Two Blacktail deer I have killer where both around 50 yards. One with a muzzleloader and the other with a 20 gauge bolt action savage shotgun. 30-30 would be perfect for the timber or smaller cuts!

I'm getting the hell out of King Co and moving to Lake Stevens.

Think I might put my efforts into Blacktail for 2021, gotta be deer around there!

Not a WA guy but am interested in hunting there. I am usually the odd guy out on these equipment threads because I hunt with a handgun. I usually hunt with a T/C Encore Pro-Hunter in 30/06 but have also killed Blackies with a Savage Striker in .308 Winchester; a Remington XP-100 in .35 Remington; an SSK Contender in .358 JDJ; and Encores in .35 Whelen Improved and .25 /06. If I had to choose one it would be the 30.06 Pro Hunter. I killed my biggest blacktail last year with the .35 Whelen Improved. Never give up and success will find you. The majority of the Blacktails I have taken were killed on the last hour of the hunt.

New to black tails here in Washington. Lots of sign in different places this year but never in the right place at the right time. I’ll be looking for a place to hang a tree stand next year.
