Blacktail hunt

My brothers and I want to do a Sitka Blacktail hunt, hopefully next year. Any suggestions/areas? We are trying to decide whether or not to do a fully DIY or do a daily drop off camp. Does anyone have any experience with either? We are leaning toward Kodiak, but open to other suggestions too.

My wife and I are planning a 2015 Sitka Blacktail hunt as well. We are in the early planning stages like you. We are hoping to do a DIY hunt on either Kodiak or POW.

I've got a pow hunt planned for 16. I'm doing it for my first trip to AK. Chose pow so I didn't have to deal with the brown bears. I'm not an expert but can share somethings I've learned about pow and the southeast in general.

And... Look at that... I didn't even read the post above mine. That's where we went. It's unguided, but you sure can't beat the warmth of a cabin after a long rainy day chasing bucks! Price is very reasonable to.

We flew to Ket, rented a truck, bought groceries, and hopped on the ferry over to POW. Worked out perfect.

One of my friends has gone to Zachar Bay lodge on Kodiak a few times. There are many options with them: hunt from the lodge by heading up hill or valley, get dropped off by skiff, rent a skiff, go sea duck hunting, etc. The friend used to go in late November to avoid bears, but usually ran into at least one each trip. There had been bow hunters that brought their own tree stands and were using them in the cottonwoods up a creek bottom. I have no idea how well that worked.

We are looking for a backcountry experience and are looking into flying to a remote lake, setting up a base camp and then hunting from there. Does any one know any good charters that would fly from Ketchikan to POW during September? Also what temperatures/weather can we expect during mid Sept. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

You can do all that by hiking into most anywhere on POW... I believe there is only a few that fly from Ket to POW, the ferry was much easier and being able to use the road system with our rental truck was awesome... We covered much more ground that way. Aug/Sep, bucks are up high. Hunt goat country and you will find bucks.

Does anyone know if the deer numbers have recovered any on Kodiak or would POW be a better choice? Hard to get a gauge without being able to scout the areas.

Two very mild winters down on Kodiak have really helped the deer population. I'm sure they're not back up to the numbers that we had prior to the winter of 2011-12, but they're definitely heading in the right direction. I've only deer hunted POW once about nine or 10 years ago so I wouldn't be very good at comparing them.

You will see more deer on Kodiak than on POW I'd think simply because you will be able to glass more. I am headed there in the fall and can hardly wait. POW was great, but it wasn't anything like I had been told.

Making my third trip to Kodiak this November. Very excited! I have never hunted POW but may try that island for an August hunt on my next trip. I like the style of hunting kodiak during November more than POW at the same time of the year because I prefer to be able to glass longer distances. Either way, you will have an adventure!
