I just heard there were two more, separate brown bear attacks in south central AK yesterday. That makes 8 people, in 5 different attacks, in the last 2 weeks.

I carry both going into camp: pepper spray and a sidearm. When I fall asleep my sidearm is tethered to me and I can locate it in pitch darkness. As for pepper spray...yes...I do believe it is effective but not without many limitations to be aware of. If I'm dawdling around camp midday, or perhaps hunting an area showing little or no sign of bears then I might go out with 'just' spray. Given that I'm often in the backcountry more than 12 days straight, there's no way I'll trust one can of spray only.
