Bipod ?

So do you carry a bipod on your rifle sheep hunting? I use to believe in them but most of my hunting now I’ve carried shooting stix that is an adjustable trigger walking stick that I love but know that may not be practical for a sheep hunt. I do have the Wiser Precision adapter for my walking stix on the way. If you do…. What make and model do you have? What has that done to your rifle weight?

100% always. I’ve taken 7 rams and each one was killed using a bipod. I’d rather lose 1# off my belly than drop the bipod off of my gun. I use an Atlas bipod. I’m sure there are better ones out there and probably a little lighter too.

Just my opinion.

Or just get really close.

I ditched the bipod after learning how to shoot off a tripod. Can also replace shooting sticks.

I can always shoot off a tripod but some situations on the side of a mountain can’t shoot off bipods.

That said, most have to upgrade their tripod and then practice.

I like CykePod because they work. A little heavier though.

I’m a big fan of my ckyepod, but it’s on the heavy side.

I have a Dall hunt booked for 2026 and will be using my Gunwerks elevate. Nearly the same features as my single pull Ckyepod, but weighs quite a bit less.

I run an Atlas bipod with a RRS ARC clamp, I won’t leave home without it. I also use my tripod in situations I absolutely can’t use my bipod. The speed and stability of a bipod just can’t be beat.

I carry a tripod over a bipod. Tripod gets used for my binos, spotter, and rifle.

Threads like this make me think I might be going overboard. My walking sticks have Wiser quick stix adapters on them, my tripod has a Tricer DZ head so I can shoot off it, and I’ve got an Atlas bt20 always mounted on my full length arca rail. I definitely have a problem.

I took a bipod along on my sheep hunt this last August. It probably makes the rifle weigh a pound extra. I run a Harris 9-13". Don't remember specific model right now...
But I would make the same choice if I am ever able go go sheep hunting again.

I didn't end up using my bipod when shooting the ram (ridgeline I shot from was so steep I rested the floorplate of my rifle magazine on the ridge and supported the buttstock). This being said, I really enjoyed being able to stand up my rifle on the bipod when it wasn't on my pack: sleeping at night, setting up/breaking down camp, glassing, etc.

Haven't sheep hunted with it but I use a hatch bipod lately. It sets up well on uneven terrain. Nice and tall to get over things in the site line. Like others have said a bipod makes a great kickstand when setting your rifle on the ground. Get one that attaches/detaches quickly if you want to try one.

1st time was very rushed, still had my pack on my back, steep angle in the middle of a boulder field where neither would have worked, and shot off guides pack. 2nd time had plenty of time to get setup and angle was less steep, used Spartan.

I've had a 8-12" Harris bipod for many years and I use it practice shooting every week, but I've never taken it hunting. My 4 rams were each one shot kills using a tree branch, rock, or backpack for a rest or just shot prone.

After my first African hunt in 2000 where my guide carried shooting sticks, I made my own 3' and 6' shooting sticks for practing here at home, and I did shoot my antelope one year off of the 3' one. I then bought first a 27-40" Trigger Stick tripod and then a 40-66" Trigger Stick tripod that also works as a walking stick. I've used these in recent years, and used the long one when I shot my moose a year ago.

I shot my sheep off my Spartan bipod. I was prepared to use whatever means to make the shot. I had the Spartan adapter for my tripod I could have used, my pack, or my bipod. In the moment I had to drop my pack quick and had my bipod in my pocket. Used it and my bino harness as a rear rest and it worked out perfect. Granted it was only 130 yards but I was rock solid.
