Bipod? Tripod? Shooting stick?

Hey guys, going out west for pronghorn for the first time in a couple weeks. I’m wondering what everyone recommends for a bipod or tripod for hunting Wyoming? Being from the East where shots are much closer, I’ve never had a bipod on my gun etc. Thank you for your time.

I’ve never actually hunted antelope, but as I want to, I have read a lot about it. Nearly everything I have read on here and elsewhere recommends a stable rest you can use seated, kneeling, or standing. Prone shots are apparently fairly rare over the brush and grass. I have been practicing with a Spartan-system set of trigger stick bipods for my front rest and my backpack for my rear rest.

A couple years ago before an oryx hunt I got some Gunstix, quad shooting sticks that have been a game changer. Can be used in all positions except prone. Remarkably light and stable.

What’s is your rifle setup. Do you have an Arca rail or Spartan adapter already?

In the past I’ve had some high prone shots. Usually sitting or kneeling. Options that have worked for us.
Tall Harris bipod or similar.
Spartan bipod on a backpack
Spartan tripod.
Big pod tripod.
If you spot some antelope, you can usually sneak over a hill or through some brush and get a 250 yard or less shot.

I've hunted WY Elk/Deer/Pronghorn for over a decade and every shot has been prone with a bipod. Leaving in 2 weeks for Deer and Elk, all shots will again be prone with a bipod. I have never had an issue shooting prone, other than cactus thorns in the wrong place, and have hunted all over the state.
The note above about sneaking over a hill or thru some brush, has played out for us more often than not.

I do like my Spartan javelin lite bipod a lot. Eventually, I may get sitting/kneeling length legs for it.

Don’t get the Springbok! It has horrible reviews around here.

I got a Trigger Sticks one because it was on sale, but I don’t love it. There’s nothing wrong with it, but I’m not really used to it yet.

I have neither, just a picatinny rail. I thought about switching to an arca rail.

You can get picatinny adapters for the Spartan system. I like the Spartan system because I can carry one nice short bipod on my LBV and one nice long bipod on my backpack or camelback and use them for all my rifles, without them permanently adding the extra weight to the rifle. Of course, there is a time to setup factor, but that’s a matter of practice. The goal is always to have options that give increasing stability depending on available time and range. I never want to be dependent on one specific setup or position.

I was interested in the Springbok but have been suspicious. I haven’t seen too many reviews, is it just really unstable?

I use the Spartan ecosystem on my hunting bolt guns: bipods and Ascent tripod with Davos Pro head. I chose the Spartan system because the bipods are so light, they are carried on my bino harness and quick to deploy. I also liked the gunsmith adapter being flush on the stock. I have used both the bipod and tripod on game with success.

I am interested in trying those shooting sticks you posted.

I have never shot an antelope though. Would love too. I mean I think I have 16 points in AZ… so maybe I’m due soon! Haha.

Ok, that at least gives you an easy mounting option. I have been using a Spartan Javelin Pro but I find I am faster just shooting off my pack. The bipod is more accurate but, for me the difference is not going to make a difference in terms of killing an animal at 500y and under.

I got the trinity rail on my RokStok and I originally planned to use the Picatinny MDT GRND-POD bipod with it. Unfortunately, this bipod doesn’t work with my rail. The slightly rounded corners on the butt-end of the trinity rail prevent it from securing. I could take it off and file them...

Ive become a fan of the tall bipod. I bought the tall Hatch Outwest. It does make sling carry a little awkward when left on the pic rail. But does attach, unattach quickly. The abilty to use from prone to seated is worth the trouble for me. A tripod is heavier and slower but more stable. A short bipod is lighter and quicker but very limited. Everything has trade offs.

The Springbok is very weird feeling and don’t like it very much.

I used a Harris Chinese knockoff then switched this year to the Gunwerks v2. Partner showed up yesterday with a little Spartan, light as heck and looked solid.
