I much prefer binos to a spotter. So, I cobbled this together primarily for use when animals are moving and I want to be able to cover a lot of ground pretty quickly. Works pretty well anytime though (I have not had a chance to try it with a doubler on my binos, but I suspect that will require move to a tripod). Sticks can rest on top of shoulders or go in your armpits---you become the tripod. You pretty much can avoid a tripod except for really long range viewing or really picking apart an area.
