Last year during third week of september (believe it was the 22nd and 23rd), we found a massive herd of elk, probably 300+. There were clearly several hot cows and many mature bulls screaming like crazy. It was my first experience seeing a big herd that late in the season.
I'm wondering how unusual this is. I stumbled on another big group this morning, probably a 150 elk, but only 1 mature bull (and a few spikes and raghorns).
Any insight on when these groups will start to break up?
