Big Herd - Late September

Last year during third week of september (believe it was the 22nd and 23rd), we found a massive herd of elk, probably 300+. There were clearly several hot cows and many mature bulls screaming like crazy. It was my first experience seeing a big herd that late in the season.

I'm wondering how unusual this is. I stumbled on another big group this morning, probably a 150 elk, but only 1 mature bull (and a few spikes and raghorns).

Any insight on when these groups will start to break up?

Have seen that several times in WY. They will break up when you or someone else gets in the middle of them and scatters them out.
