This old man(71) hasn't bowhunted elk since I moved from Colorado in 2000. Returning this fall with friends. As best I recall the mature bulls had cows herded up by about the middle of Sept. making calling one in more challenging. Trying to figure timing as best I can. What say ye?

I’m of the opinion that’s it’s easier to kill “a bull” later in September when satellite bulls are easier to locate and call in, but it’s easier to kill “a big bull” in early to mid September before they have their big harems. YEMV. Pick your poison.

I always try and include September 19 - 23 in any elk hunt that I can.
Those dates always seem to have the most action.

It seems to vary by location for me. I've seen some big herd bulls all cowed up in August, and I've seen some really big lone bulls the third week of September. But IMO they're a heck of a lot more fun after they've cowed up.
