The saying goes “Beware the man with one rifle, he knows how to use it”. I stumbled on this saying just now. What’s everyone’s thoughts on this? I can honestly say I have one rifle and I use it religiously on all my hunts. I can offhand a buck at 50-150 yards and I can prone, dial the turret, and kill out to 1000 yards. I knew what I needed and I was very selective on my rifle/caliber when purchasing. I didn’t have the goal to just master one rifle at the time though. I was young and simply couldn’t afford a second or third rifle. I know a lot people that have multiple rifles and shoot them all really good at the range! I also know people that have taken a different rifle on a hunt because they thought it was the right tool for the job. It makes total sense but everyone knows someone that has said, if I had a different rifle I wouldn’t have missed that big ole buck. Interesting concept though to shoot only one rifle and selecting a cartridge that addresses each situation you find yourself in. I haven’t realized I was following this concept until I read this but it’s worked well for me! What’s your opinions? Thanks for reading!!

Nice bucks!

Mastery of a rifle makes it useful. If it is capable of 1000 yards, all the more useful. Most guys don't shoot much at all. Few will actually burn out a barrel. Having one rifle makes a difference.

I shoot several hundred rounds a year, maybe over 1000 to 1500 sometimes. I am still a rookie at execution. It takes practice. But, I still have consolidated my collection and shoot what I love.

Well put man! I agree with you! I like to train with a really heavy rim fire rifle in the off season for offhand shooting. It’s fun, cheap and very useful. I do have a custom 338 lapua but I’ve honestly only shot maybe 100-150 rounds through it. All my other training is with my hunting rifle. I’ve had weatherby replace the barrel 3 times since 2011 lol. Shooting is just fun!

Beware the person that shoots a lot, regardless of how many rifles they may own...they know how to use them.

The best shots I’ve been around shoot from field positions a lot, usually with multiple rifles. They often varmint hunt too. Ymmv.

I only have one rifle. 308 I can krill anything in North America under 500 yards. Never considered 1000. I’m not there in my confidence but I never hesitate with my 308

Do you think they can execute better in the moment of truth with multiple rifles or better with one rifle they are married to? I use mine for coyotes in the off season. Hunting coyotes will for sure tighten your groups lol! Those dang things are so much smaller and move so much faster than you think! Successful predator hunters are strait killers. I agree with shooting a lot and being comfortable behind the trigger regardless of the rifle but I can’t say I think they are just as deadly with multiple weapons as they would be with one. I have my turret positions memorized for every distance to 600. After that distance I have to refer to my Kestrel. I can’t say doing that with multiple rifles would be easy.. more often then not big deer simply don’t give you enough time to fiddle around and figure your solution to make the shot. I practice ranging, kestrel reference, implementation on the turret and shooting in a step by step program. With this one rifle my shots beyond 600 take 31 seconds from start to finish. When I started it was nearly two full minutes to complete this program. My whole life besides work though is dedicated to mule deer hunting. I’m a freak and I realize most people are not this way.

I love the way you think my friend! .308 is such an underrated caliber. My dad has shot one since he retired from the service and he fires one shot every year!! Freakin guy is deadly.

I have one rifle I use for big game.

But having a bunch of specialized ones is fun too.

So I spend 100 days or so each year carrying my #1, but have #2-#10 that get a few days use each as well.

Do you think there is a certain almost chemistry between you and your big game rifle? I think with mine there is!

Only because you have shot it and have confidence. It probably fits you and you have adapted to the fit. Too many people shoot rilfes as the come, and sell the ones that fit worst.

I see this thread as the opposite of the thread about rifles being cursed, lol.

Beautiful bucks!

I have one rifle and know how to use it. Just when I tried my boys x-bolt hcs, though a work of art and feels great, it's not for me. My 30 year old ruger skeleton felt more natural. I would love to have more rifles however in reality that is atleast 1 year of a diy hunt I would be missing out on.

I am very horrible about items in general. I don’t like things to lay around unused. I have considered a second rifle. Just can’t convince myself I need it. The only real reason I would purchase another rifle would be for SWC cartridge states.
