Redhawk 44 mag, 4”.

Those 329s are bullshit, you can’t fire heavy bullets out of them. Last revolver id ever buy although the weight is nice.
I can shoot 255 grain hard cast rather well. Hope I never find out if they are not enough but still more than the 10mm guys got.

Yeah but the 10mm guys can have 16 rounds of 220, and they can probably shoot it better than most people can shoot an ultra light 44mag. I’d take that any day over a 329.
I shoot both well but you live in the belly of the beast. You should know better than me.

Does anyone find value and use a 1911 in 10mm for this job? I often see the various .44 mags and Glock 20 in 10mm touted but not much talk of a quality 1911 in 10mm. Thanks for your feedback.

I don’t know better than anybody, just what I’ve noticed from shooting both fairly extensively. I don’t even shoot my revolvers any more and should probably sell them. I’m all in with the 10mm Glock.

I think if you are familiar with the 1911 and that’s what you like then a 10mm one would absolutely be useful although it’s not a common weapon in bear country. As was pointed out, even the ultralight revolvers can shoot 255g bullets bit can those 1911s handle a 220g ? And even so, you only get one more round than a revolver. Like I said though, if you’re a 1911 guy and like them, sure.

For me personally, I like 1911s but never considered getting one in 10mm.

I own a Kimber Camp Guard. It shoots great but is very heavy to carry.

I need to do more testing with both versions I own. I`m worried the auto loader wont cycle when super dirty. The dirty is my fault cause I carry on pack belt. When taking of pack it gets thrown down in the dirt. Just my experience.

Glocks are designed to run dirty, I’ve never had an issue and I don’t take care of my glocks. There are plenty of torture tests for n YouTube as well.

It’s worth pointing out that if a pistol fails to cycle, you can just rack it and it’s good to go usually, if a revolver locks up because a bullet backed out, you are not getting it back in service anytime soon.

I have 3 Glock20s and carry them everywhere, when I’m rafting, jet boating, hunting, snow machining, fishing, they get dunked, covered in snow, rained on and I don’t ever clean them up, I just hang dry them when I get home. Never had an issue, they are made for that.

I’m 100% converted, no way around it. I havnt pulled out a revolver in years other than to show them to friends.

In regard to your question about the reliability of semi autos, I was just thinking about the other guy asking about 1911s and I’d say these modern super tight high end custom
Matched 1911s out these days are much different than the rattle can springfields and rands used in the trenches in the world wars and Korea. Those loose tolerances allowed them to clear debris out and made them more reliable (notice you can see daylight through a Glock). These new 1911s are so tight, I’d hate to get one dirty and hope it still works.

I hear that. I got a Kimber, Springfield and Glock. I would feel safer out with the Glock. It has been reliable so far.

On a lighter note. How do you carry your white claw? Joking :)

I have a can holder for fishing made by fishpond, it’s basically a coozy with a neck strap. It’s great when I’m fishing in the summer, if I get a fish on or need to reel in line I just let it hang there, it works great. It also works perfectly with gravity, if I bend over to pick something up while the white claw is hanging there it just stays upright. It’s really genius and I can’t believe I didn’t discover it sooner. No more knocked over white claws in the bank of rivers or lakes.

I carried a Ruger Redhawk when I was stationed in Kodiak. If I had to do it all over again I'd go for a high-cap 10mm semi-auto. I know without a doubt I'd perform better with the semi-auto. Revolvers are not easy to master.

I carry a Smith and Wesson 329pd in 44 mag. It’s light and accurate. Only down side is that it has trouble shooting the heavier bear loads and it kicks like a mule.

this is what I carry as well in grizzly country (along with handy bear spray!). 305 gr HSM hard casts

I carry in it a Razco holster attached to my bino harness, front and center

"kick like mule" might be kind :)

You guys that carry the 329 pd on your chest. Please give me an honest review.

I need to go this route but have been putting it off. Learned it is easy to leave your weapon on pack while taking care of an animal and not realize it.

When I lived in the US I had a 6" S&W 629 .44 Mag...52 ozs, easy to to shoot, great trigger, very accurate, digested all loads, barrel didn't lead with cast bullets etc. I remember winning an egg shoot with it, shooting against guys with autos that couldn't hit eggs at 15 yds or whatever the range was...even though they would fire twice or 3X as many shots in the allocated time as I could.

I also owned a 4" S&W 329 .44 Mag, 26 ozs, not much fun to shoot unless firing .44 Special power loads...but the barrel really leaded quickly with cast bullets. It would make my palm go numb from shooting 6 "full power" loads....240 gr jacketed reloads with W296. Accuracy I was able to achieve was significantly less than the 629 but not terrible either. Trigger was good, and I liked the green fiber front sight so well I put an identical one on the 629. If I was getting a gun to carry bow hunting, in the US it would be the 329 rather than the heavy (2X) 629. If I was a handgun hunter, it would be the 629 without a doubt.

Both S&Ws got re-homed when I moved to BC. Bear spray for bowhunting now, and typically a shotgun (SxS Stevens 311) or rifle (Kimber Montana .338 Federal) for followup on black bears and/or for going back for meat when packing caribou or moose.

Not a revolver but as another option and 44mag firepower in a high capacity manageable firearm would be a Glock 21 with a 460 Rowland conversion. They have 460 Rowland conversions for others too.
