Hey, I was curious if anyone knew of a good way to repackage freeze dried meals to have them be more packable/light.. and safe to put hot water in them to eat out of.. I'm not sure if just zip lock bags will be strong enough with the boiling water?

thanks!

I've eaten many meals out of a freezer ziploc. I think they are a little thicker than the regular sandwich bags, and I have not tried those.

Any freeze dry meal I've had you eat out of the packet it came in.

Never heard of any other way of eating it.

The ones I use are sold vac packed which saves space as it is.

Are you talking DIY freeze dry meals or something?

I feel like it's more trouble than it's worth, but the UL guys do it as suggested in earlier post. I have used my beanie and puffy as a coozie before. You can open the top, squeeze the air out and seal with the ziplock top to make them pack better which is all I do now.

I wouldn't use just any plastic bag to add boiling water to the meal. I could see carrying the meal in any container just for convenience. Boil the water then dump the meal in the container you boiled the water in.

I repackage them in quart zip lock bags. Then carry one original package to rehydrate and eat out of. I've had the freezer zip locks fail with boiling water. Saves a lot of room in the pack.

sweet.. what size zip lock gallon bags for the average freeze dried meal..?
Ummmm…maybe a gallon?🤣 sorry, I had to do it. All kidding aside, I’m sure you meant to ask what size of ziplock bag. I usually use a quart as well and sometimes a gallon if I decide I want a bigger meal.

I've heard of others doing this as well and I like the idea. You just use 1 mylar bag to eat out of the whole time? The food from the previous meal just stays in the bag and gets crusty until the next meal?

I tried it for lunch the other day to test out a new Peak meal I bought. Put the meal into a quart freezer bag, which is how I would pack it. Then put the quart bag into the foil Peak bag before I poured the water in. Sturdier that way and easier to hold hot. Then when I was done I just pulled the Ziploc out of the Peak foil bag and tossed it. That way you could carry one foil bag and keep it clean and reuse it the whole time.

I just packaged 21 meals for my alaska season tonight. If I repackaged the dinners into ziplocks, I was able to get a full day including breakfast and dinner in a half gallon ziplock. With a dinner in the original packaging, even with the air squeezed out, that same day needed a full gallon bag. This is my first time to put the effort in to re package meals, but they saved about .4 ozs per day, and a ton of pack space. Pic is before the first batch was bagged.
