Hey folks I was hoping to get some advice on what you may have found to be the best product for tick repellant. After a few hours of squirrel hunting the other evening my son had 16 ticks on him! These were all really, really small ticks. Needless to say he is a tick magnet, they are really drawn to him even with bug repellant on. We had a family member with lyme disease so my wife stays worked up about him being around ticks. What have you all found to work well while hopefully being scent free? Thanks in advance for the help.

Permetherin. You can buy a concentrated form and mix it yourself. Or, buy a pre-mixed version like Sawyer's for convenience. Permetherin flat out works. Doubt you'll find anything better.

Permethrin is the best thing I've found. I've turkey hunted some of the most ticked infested country in Illinois and that's the only thing I've found that makes a difference. You don't apply it to your skin but pretreat you clothes with it. Most major outdoor retailers should carry it.

Ditto Permethrin. Have used it the last two or three seasons turkey hunting and haven't had a single tick. Works great.

Wow that was quick thanks gentlemen I will get some on order!

Visit your local Walmart and get some Sawyers permethrin spray. It's a big yellow container. Apply heavily to his clothing a few days before the hunt and you shouldn't have anymore tick problems.

Buy the concentrate at a Farm and Fleet or similar Farm supply store. For the price of a can or two of spray, you can treat thirty times the amount of clothing using the concentrate.

Share what you don't need with your friends.

Sounds like you have it covered but I'll give another vote for permethrin. It works really well and lasts for over a month. I treat my clothes, pack, hammock, etc. with it twice a year and it works wonders. It also works on other bugs like mosquitos.

Good advice on permethrin on clothing (include your hat).

I still use a little Ultrathon lotion on my ankles/calves and around my waist. It has a long duration of action. Apply with a nitrile glove unless you plan on refinishing your gun stock.

Not sure if advisable, but have always turned clothes inside out to spray. Never had an issue with rash or discomfort from doing this but always let the spray dry before wearing. If was camping would do the entire site my tent and gear was on too. Wally world is where have picked up the sawyer brand in camping section

+1 on the sawyers. i have a pair of lightweight pants and long sleeve shirt that i keep treated with sawyers for working outside in the summer. my father-in-law got lime disease a couple of years ago and he likes the elimitick gamehide stuff.

People around here swear by Permethrin, but I find it to be a giant pain in the ass, at least to use it according to the label. I make sure to wear long pants and sleeves, tuck the pants into socks/boots/gaiters, tuck in your shirt, and spray a little deet on my neck and haven't had one dig in for a few years, and that is in some extremely tick dense areas.

I also avoid walking through switchgrass and barberry, for whatever reason I have found those two to be tick magnets in my area 10x worse than anything else.

Does it have any nasty odor once it is dry? How about if it rains?

Permetherin...Up until this year, I always bought Sawyers. THis year I went to farm supply and bought the concentrate and mixed it up myself. Either way works, but if you use a lot of it, you'll want to mix it yourself.

Okay guys I stopped by Walmart on my way home from work and picked up a bottle of Sawyers. I have his clothes sprayed and drying now. It's certainly cheaper buying in bigger containers or concentrate so will be doing that in the future. For now just happy to have a solution for the weekend. Thanks again!
