My preference is more lighter/thinner layers rather than fewer-heavier layers....especially if I'm doing much hiking between glassing spots. Having more layers offers more options for being comfortable. There aren't many days I am so cold that I need to put everything on to stay toasty but it's always good to be safe than sorry! Depending upon the weather and amount of hiking I often vary what I wear and carry. In Colo and Wyo where I hunt on a regular basis it can be 0 degrees one day and 60 the next. My 90's jacket worn alone is definitely not meant for 0 degree windy weather by itself but when I layer it works fantastic. My preference is a jacket similar to 90's and layering rather than a heavier jacket that I would be roasting and sweating in if worn by itself. If I did a bunch of tree stand hunting for whitetails it would be a different scenario but for hunting the West where I do a lot of hiking between glassing spots I prefer a lighter outer jacket.
I've been happy with windstopper vest as another relatively light, super warm layer. I often bring my rain gear along in the winter in case there is snow. Nice for sitting down and being dry in snow plus it cuts wind well. The thicker Cabelas micro-tex shirts tend to be super warm, dry fast, and relatively compact....and are inexpensive. I often wear a base layer camo shirt. I often strip down to my base layer shirt on warm days while hiking/packing game, etc. It's always good to have hoodies to cut wind around your neck and head. Obviously my 90's jacket and rain jacket have hoods. A warm stocking hat plus neck gator or baclava are always with me on super cold/windy days.
