Just got back to South Louisiana from my first elk hunt (CO first rifle). I wore a pair of Columbia hiking boots that I’ve had for a few years now. They got me through but I’ll be looking to upgrade into an all around mountain hunting boot before next year.
For the other southeastern based people here who might’ve done this before, would it be easier for me to travel to a city with a scheel’s and try boots on in-store, or order 5 or so pairs to the house and return the 4 that I don’t keep? My main concern is a company giving me a hard time on a return even if the boots don’t get worn outside, which is probably an irrational fear. Just don’t wanna be on the hook for boots I don’t want.
Also, what’s the best way to test/measure the stiffness of a boot, either in store or at home? Raised step up/down with my foot halfway on the platform? I think I’ll lean towards a boot with more flex but I doubt walking around on flat ground would demonstrate the differences.
Considering crispi, hanwag, kenetrek, Salomon, and maybe schnee’s, if that changes anything.
