Best Open/Peep Sight Options For Utah Restricted Rifle Hunts?

Hey all,

Utah just introduced restricted rifle hunts that only allow open/peep sights for some of their deer hunt units. Could I get some recommendations on what to use? Trying to see if there’s an easy solution that would just mount on the picatinny action and not require adding some sort of front sight and/or barrel modification.

Best sites so far are the sites on a Ruger Scout Rifle. YMMV but I like the flat topped front site more than a rounded bead site. Longer site radius helps so this is not the best place for a 16 inch barrel.
Very interesting. Is this all rifles or muzzle loaders?

It’s specific units with specific “restricted rifle” hunts. Muzzleloader scopes were removed last year. There’s still “regular” rifle hunts where you can use a scoped rifle, but they’re testing these restricted hunts to see if it’s an option on the poorly producing deer units to help improve deer numbers. It’s in place for a few years for them to track. I have doubts, but time will tell.

Hate to break it to you but you’re gonna need a front sight.
New England custom
Skinner sights
Lyman just to name a few.

Or the more fun route, buy a lever action or a Winchester M70 or Ruger scout with factory irons.

Some of the best open sights I've used were found on the us m14 service rifle. Not sure if they are legal for hunting with where you are but they are accurate & durable.
No semi-autos for the Utah restricted hunts.

A 1903-A3 or a Lee Enfield No 4 Mk 1 will give the M1/M1A sights a run for their money though.

By mid- summer there hopefully will be an iron sigh kit specifically for centerfire rifles available. Current options are less than optimum.

Look at the muzzleloader thread. Lost of info for open sights. I run a Williams adjustable peep and a globe with a fine cross hair up front. I can shoot a 3” group at 300 yards with my Knight UL 45 if I do my part. The knight is based off of a model 700 action so I believe the sights would carry over to any 700 based actions.

Will those open site kits be practical as backup or will they be more of a stand alone option

If you are asking me- backup applicable. Fully functional aperture sights, with the idea being that someone can remove their scope for these hunts, and have a legitimate iron sights system.

My grandfather was a stickler for backups. I have several of his old rifles that had iron sights and scopes installed. Some of the old Williams peeps could be slid out of the mount and put in your pocket. Easy enough to remove the old scope with Weaver mounts and slide in the peep if needed.

Haven't looked in years but Williams used to make pretty good iron sights.
