Best GPS Unit without SmartPhone

I just bought the 67i (inReach model) for $499 on sale (MSRP $599) on AMZN.

Thanks for the update, picked one up as well. I’ve used the original inreach for years with success but it’s a pain to use for mapping. Never fails, once or five times a season my onX phone app decides to not work, this should be a good back up.

I received an email this morning that the 67i is on sale for $499 directly from Garmin too. Link HERE.

I believe other devices using inReach Tech are on sale too.

No afflilation.

Maybe a dumb question: but does it make sense to buy a cheap old smartphone just to use for this?

Change out your SIM card, put nothing on it other than OnX/whatever service you want, and go hunting?

I almost upgraded from the 66i to the 67. The "hiking guy" on YouTube convinced me to save my money. The longer battery life and slightly more accurate mapping points in challenging areas do seem to be positive factors.

Just for some perspective, that gentleman does not do a lot of backcountry multi day trips. He does know hiking GPS systems and how they work on a trail. I do quite a few multi day trips in the Smokey's and find his knowledge to be spot-on and pertinent.
I watched that video. That and your post will make me look for a 66 as my first gps system

Check out Garmin devices. I used Garmin etrex several years ago. Don’t know if they are continue to sell this cheap line of devices, but they have more premium products and they are great for navigation.
