What’s the best April Fools prank you’ve done or had done to you?
I’ve done a few good ones over the years but probably my most elaborate one involved me getting my boss convinced that a former company he interviewed with prior to working for our company had been desperately trying to get in contact with him to hire him.
I wrote up a formal letter, added the company’s logo at the top to make it look like letterhead, and printed it on good quality paper. I made sure to put April 1 as the date at the top. I also had a business card of the guy he interviewed with a couple years prior. I put the letter and business card in a FedEx next day priority envelope and had it mailed to the office.
In the letter I wrote a bunch of stuff to stroke my boss’ ego, saying he was the smartest and best candidate thats ever been interviewed and put some details in it that I know my boss would have touted in the interview.
From across the room I watched my boss open the FedEx envelope and read the letter with a perplexed but flattered look on his face. By the end of the day he come over to my desk and says “you’re never going to beleive this, you know that company we talked about a while back that I told you I interviewed with before working here, they just sent me an overnight FedEx package saying that I’m the best candidate they’ve ever had and want to hire me “
It took all my will to not break out laughing at that moment. However I held it together and let it run for a few days. Everyday he’d talk to me about it and he even said he discussed it with his wife who advised him not to respond to the letter. At that point when I realized he was thinking of reaching out to the company I had to interject. I asked him to tell me what the date was at the top of the letter. He said April 1st. I asked him if there was any significance to that date. He said No. I then asked him what’s another way of saying April 1st. He looked perplexed and asked what I meant. I then told him another way of saying April 1st is APRIL FOOLS! He still didn’t get it, and I had to tell him it was a joke/prank. He still was trying to grasp that it was a joke and kept asking questions, like if it was a joke how is it on letterhead and how is there a business card in the package. I then had to tell him all the details of how I planned it for him to fully realize it was a prank.
Since then it’s been much more difficult to play pranks on my coworkers. Last week an email was sent out across the department warning everyone that Aprl Fools Day is coming up and everyone should be skeptical of all the things I say or do.
