I am completely new to elk hunting and western hunting in general and looking to dive in head first. Planning a DIY hunt with another newbie this fall in CO. Looking for any good resources/online guides to read up on. Any advice/links/words of wisdom appreciated.

Definitely check out the ElkNut app. A great starting point to begin wrapping your head around elk vocalizations.

No doubt Paul's stuff cuts the learning curve. And here's why for me. Not because I started calling in big bulls right away, but because I started having encounters with lots of elk right away. And that's where you start understanding what Paul's talking about. But you have to have the encounters before you start unlocking the elk code. And Paul's stuff will definitely cut that time way down for those with an open mind.

I'm also new and planning my first elk hunt this fall.

I've found the following super helpful.
Podcasts:
Elk Talk
Hunt Talk Radio
Hunt Backcountry
Transition Wild
Backcountry Rookies
Cutting the Distance
Sites:
Elk101.com
Gohunt.com
Youtube channels:
Elknut
Elk101.com
Randy Newburg, Hunter

Go to CPW’s website/Things To Do/ Hunt Big Game, then scroll down and click Plan Your Hunt, Big Game Hunt Planner and Colorado Hunting Atlas. There’s a 💩 pile of info right there.

There a lot of great threads on here about elk hunting strategy, first time tips, gear, etc. Some are obvious by the name, some aren't, like a recent one about not seeing elk the whole trip, which had many great comments about being mobile. It just takes some time commitment to read through stuff.

Books: Don Lauback (Elk Talk, Elk Tactics, Elk Hunter). Elk Hunting The West (Eastman).

Elk101 online course is very helpful (C. Jacobsen).
Randy Newberg has a lot of good content.

ElkNut app.

I watch solo hunter, MeatEater, Fresh Tracks.

Best thing to do IMO is to search and read all of "cnelk" posts on here. They are pretty much the gospel of elk hunting.

Not sure about that ^^^^ Ive just made enough mistakes to hopefully help others not make the same

I'd echo the several suggestions you've got on Elk101. I'd been hunting elk for a while and for the fun of it subscribed to Elk101 two years ago when I got drawn for a primo early archery hunt in Arizona. My friend got drawn for same hunt and an early archery tag in Utah.

The course material put us on elk fast and we went 3/3. Wouldn't have come close to that success without having gone through the courses. Well worth the cost.

New to the site as well. All the info is appreciated from all the seasoned hunters out there. Thank you.

I’ve been doing alot of the things previously mentioned on here dbreder85.

I’ve been doing research/learning for the last 3.5 months and I’ve found podcasts including the ones mentioned above have helped me out the most. I listen to them on my commute to and from work. Podcast with the Elknut are some of my favorites though. Paul seems like a great guy and the way he gets excited about elk hunting gets me excited and 2020 will be my first as well.

Cougar- Reading your post gives me a terrible urge to subscribe to Elk101...
LOL. You won't be disappointed. There's a lot of stuff in there for beginners but his info around setups is great. I didn't grow up hunting so there's always something to learn on a refresher too.

We called in a 6x6 on opening day into 35 yards that I 100% would have blown out if I hadn't watched those videos a few times over.
