I'm open to both new and used options, and I don’t mind doing some tuning if necessary. Right now, I don’t have a preference for a specific brand, but my main focus is reliability.

For those with experience in this price range, what bows would you recommend? And what exactly do I look for when purchasing a bow? Are there any must-have accessories that I should budget for? Also, would I be better off buying a bare bow and adding accessories later, or should I look for a ready-to-shoot package?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

(My current budget is ~$400)

Used flagship is the right answer. I bought my son a very lightly used Phase 4 last summer for like $700 with a rest. VX3's and VXRs have to be crazy deals right now.

ArcheryTalk is the best place to buy if you can't find on locally.

Go to a shop and shoot a bunch. Then make a decision based on what you liked. You can even shoot some of the flagships and then buy used after a little education.

I went with a Hoyt Torrex for my first bow. And it’s been great. I bet you could pick up a loaded used one for that price

I would by a used Mathews that someone is selling with sights, rest, etc on it. You can find good deals on bows people have hardly every shot. Anything after the No Cam is worth it.
