Since I'm going to be in a thick area where baiting isn't allowed, has anyone had any success using food scents, like the Bear Bomb or something like that? They have a Bacon flavor that sounds pretty appetizing..

I've had bad experience with White-tail scents and stopped using them years ago.. This is different though.. Not actually urine or a scent, more a bait smell that doesn't count as bait..

I have had great success using honey burns for bears here in Alaska,, that said. Check your regulations, as here any kind of scent IS considered baiting and requires a baiting permit.

I to think "scent" would be bait, but in any case... I really have had great luck with two kinds of scents. One is the Sow in Heat from Boarmasters and the other is my absolute favorite... It's called Knock-Out and it is made by James Valley Scents. I have been using that for the past 4 years or so and it is incredible... VERY VERY strong smell...

Dang, thought it was legal but...

The regs give a lengthy definition of what is considered bait and says basically scents are no problem as long as they aren't nutritional.. Then later on in the regs I found this line: "scents or lures are legal as long as they do not mimic food"

Nvm :(

Nutritional as in smell like something they'd eat. Food. You can smell like a bear if you want to. Personally, I don't want to.

The best thing to do is use natural baits. Berries, acorns etc. You can also stake out a gut pile as long as you don't move it. That would be for Colorado. I don't know about Texas.
