Always wanted to rug my first bear. Shot a nice boar this year and was convinced to skin it to be a 3/4 or 1/2 mount due to size. now I am regretting it and wanting a rug, cape is frozen and sitting in freezer. Will it be possible for a taxidermist to convert it to a rug? (Tail is on the leg the way it was skinned)

Should be if it ain't already salted and the hide is whole of course. Once you're ready (or he is), thaw it and flesh it then salt it before tanning. Unless I'm missing something in your facts.

That is correct but it was dorsal cut for skinning, hide is whole, unsalted and rolled up in the freezer

They can skin the back up and slice the belly if I understand what you are saying. Long bear hair covers mistakes nicely.

If all the hide is there, yes. It can be cut as needed, and sewn from underneath as needed too. The felt backing will cover stitching and like was mentioned, the hair on a bear will never show that if done right.

Exactly what was said earlier. If it’s a whole hide and dorsal cut then it can be sewn up the back then split up the belly. This would need to be done after tanning though. I’ve sewn up some crazy stuff when I did taxidermy.

I think the rug is the right move. That's what I'll do when I finally kill a bear...

If it's all there and not rotted ,it's all fixable ,if it was me I'd charge more for sewing it all up but you'll get what you want in the end
Yep, I always charged more for excessive or extra sewing. Some capes around the arm pits and brisket were like a dang jigsaw puzzle. Don’t even get me started on splits up the back of the neck and around the pedacles or horn base. Eyes and scent glands in front of the eye were always hacked to pieces. I always requested that customers bring in their mount with cape still on the head so I could cape it. Sometimes it’s not possible.

yeah, planning on paying extra to fix it, just wanted to make sure it could be done and not look like total crap. Appreciate everyones help!

If it's a small bear, I'd have it soft tanned and hang it by the nose on a nail and take the money saved and go kill a bigger bear to mount or rug. If it isn't what you want, I'd stop putting money into it.

They can stitch together, the long hair hides it better like others have said. I personally have switched over to 3/4 mounts and dont do rugs. it shows the size better in my opinion, but its personal preference
