Going up in a few weeks (first few days of October) to help a family member get on a bear. He has a brown bear and black bear tag. The current plan isn’t hike in on the Crescent Lake trail go the cabin that he reserved.

I grew up in Alaska and now live in the PNW.

Does anyone have any general advice on the area? I know the immediate area you can’t hunt in. I’m guessing the bears will be trying to find the last of the berries up in the alpine, and I’m not sure if there would still be salmon carcasses around they may decide to munch on. I also considered calling, but I’m not as excited about the idea of drawing in a brown bear even though he has a tag. He has never harvested a big game animal, only small game. My strategy was going to be to get in, and find a knob to glass the varies draws and hillsides.

Beautiful area and a solid plan. It won't be hard to find a bear, but finding one you can easily access will be your biggest challenge. Harvest some of the meat. Them blueberry bears are a whole different flavor.

We are gonna try! I’ll be happy if I can spot one for him even. That would be a big win. He sort of wants to focus on small game a bit too. Not sure I’m gonna hike in my 15x and my 10x, but I’ll probably consider lugging my tripod up just in case.
