I was approached in somewhat the same manner. Red flag was to immediately go to texting vs PM's on the Slide. Was using a well known member and good guy's info from here. How they do it confuses me BUT there will always be some type of red flag they slip up on if you're very careful.
i often ask the seller to text me as i dont check the slide daily but use PP G&S for payment

Just had a piece of trash try to scam me. Claimed to have the rifle I was looking for. Found the pictures of the rifle he sent me with the same serial number on a different website and he photoshopped a different background onto it

If you want to buy a firearm off here you can’t rely on the PayPal protection. I would suggest you evaluate the persons feedback on here or other places like eBay etc. Ask them to FaceTime with you to verify that they are who they say they are and they have the firearm. Get their phone number, email and physical address and do your due diligence to make sure that info is legit. If all that checks out, it’s fine to pay with FF but leave the comments blank. I have purchased a rifle successfully off Rokslide like this. Overall it should be doable but again, if there are any alarm bells, back out of the deal. If the seller is pressuring you in any way, that is a red flag in my mind. Honestly this advice goes for any high dollar item whether it be optics, bows, firearms etc.

Luckily I feel like I haven’t seen scammers trying to scam people on firearm deals as it’s probably territory they don’t want to be in but I’m sure they’re out there.
Just had one one try to scam me on a firearms deal. Found the same pictures of the rifle he photoshopped a different background onto on a different website from last year

Just another confirmation to be extra vigilant & cautionary in your purchases.

Had it tried 2x with a scammer replying to my WTB add here last few weeks. They have no moral conscious & view everything as a mental game of conquering.

Past history selling here is probably your best defense. If they won’t find the time to talk with me via phone is also something I’m not fond of either. The IOT has taken a lot of the personal familiarity out of the human equation.

I’m an old school guy & like to find people of same mindset. I’m busy too. But I always make time to answer or ask important questions in a business transaction. I can easily see the errors of non-personal IOT vs old school quick phone call to verify info.

I know it's considered taboo to divulge personal information over the internet, but when I'm buying or selling on one of these forums, I always refer people to my professional webpage so they can ensure that I'm legit. On sites such as here where I don't frequent as often, I refer them to sites where I have thousands of posts, and I tend to use my actual name, so I can get cross platform recognition.

No matter how careful you are though, there's always the possibility of being scammed. I had someone go so far as to send me pictures of boxes at a local post office with a time stamp on them - when I got the boxes they were empty. The seller disappeared. Luckily, PayPal covered me, but it took many moons to get my money back.

I will add to this that sometimes people dont give out phone numbers willingly. I will do it for high ticket items but I had a dude that wanted to call me over a 20 dollar rail. I am sorry but I am not going to give my number out for 20 bucks.

Past feedback is the best but dont forget that accounts can and do get hacked.

Gotta stay on your toes and accept the risk associated with buy online.

For sure I get your point.

$20.00 isn’t going to break the bank for sure. The time spent putting the deal together is worth more than that.

Without a past transaction history it certainly puts a red flag up no doubt about that.

If people don’t want to talk it’s certainly their choice. If they don’t want to make the effort it’s certainly their choice.

I’ll wait & pay more for an item where I actually have a personal contact familiarity or comfort level. As the fraud levels continue at pandemic proportions I suspect the less trusting society & culture we will become. Certainly not progress but regress devolving into a miserable state that appears where it is going.

So be it. People get out of life what they put into it. You put no effort & nothing in you’ll find you often get nothing out of it in return. Glad I have a history even with one shitty deal transaction that I didn’t even enter into but yet a comment was allowed due to weird rules on here. My guard is always up. Pain teaches you things.
