Might be a long shot (no pun intended), but does anyone have a cutters laying around that they’d let me borrow for a day? I have a Marlin XL7VH in .308 with the heavy contour barrel that I’m going to cut from 26” to 20” in order to save some weight and be less wieldy.

I can’t really justify (to my wife anyway) buying the 90 degree face cutter, 45 degree crown cutter, .308 guide, and t handle for a job that will take all of about 15 minutes to complete. So I figured it was worth asking on here to see if there was anyone that had these laying around that would let me borrow them for a day or so. I’d obviously pay for the shipping both ways, but I was curious if anyone had these.

Hacksaw to length

Bastard file to square up face

Chamfer tool to cut crown

Or brass no.2 screw and lapping compound.

Honestly i’ll Donate 20$ PayPal if it ends up shooting terribly.

You could ragged hacksaw it and hit it a bit with a chamfer tool and it’ll shoot fine.

This is kind of what I was leaning towards doing if I couldn’t get my hands on the right tooling. I’m just OCD about most things when it comes to my bows and guns.

I’m assuming you’ve done this before?

Well I messed up the post, but that thread has a long discussion and links to the issue.

I’d cut it, file square, use a countersink bit to recess the crown just a hair then polish with the brass screw and lapping compound.

Done it an even half dozen times.

If a factory gun won’t shot i’ll Chop it to 21” just to see if an improvement is made. If it’s all good then leave it.

If it’s a 1.5moa fun or worse might as well make it short and handy.

Not a bad idea to run a dowel rod down the barrel on a closed bolt if ur gonna cut it close to 16”

What profile was that barrel?

My wife shot her new Savage 12fv tonight. Would be nice to lighten it up.

Not sure if the exact measurements since it’s a Marlin, but it’s the X7VH- which I assume to just be considered bull?
