With all the different opinions on the internet I figured I would start and argument here haha

Who cleans their rifle after every time they shoot it?

Who never cleans it?

Who thinks cleaning it damages the barrel and hurts accuracy??

What are your thoughts

Obviously every gun is different but my dad has a 10 year old savage 116 .270 that's never been cleaned, and clover leaf's 3 rounds every year when we sight it in.

Are we talking deep clean or just clear out excess carbon fouling? I know my guns will not shoot well with a perfectly clean barrel and will tighten up after 3-4 shots and settle back to original POI.

I "clean" the inside of my barrel once accuracy starts falling off. I will wipe my rifles down as needed.

Not sure how a Nylon brush could hurt or generally solvents.....poor cleaning procedures and running a rod against the inside of the barrel has probably wrecked more guns than not cleaning.

So true! Even a nylon brush is abrasive, once it's dirty and dragging debris back and forth.
Ideally pushing a clean patch through - one way, with a good rod and bore guide is the best way if kept to a minimum.

I'm generally a clean when accuracy starts to fall off and how frequently that is is dependent on the gun.

I've found that all my guns with custom barrels will go MUCH longer without cleanings than any factory barreled gun I've ever owned.

I'm generally pretty anal about having and using a proper fitting bore guide. They maybe cost a little more and aren't always the easiest to get but I have Lucas bore guides for most of my guns and the few that I don't have them for I have Possom Hollow bore guides. I really hate to do any kind of cleaning without using a decent bore guide.

Also, I try and never pull a brush back across the muzzle once it has exited out the end.

I try to clean my hunting rifles after the end of the season. Just cleaned my two main hunting rifles a few weeks ago and I'll shoot a few rounds to confirm zero before this next season. I estimate about 10-20 rounds down those two hunting rifles per year now that I have a load developed. When working up a new load it can take 30 or so rounds to get it dialed in. They sit for a few months in the off season so I like to clean them up before storage.

Fun rifles get cleaned after I feel like they are getting dirty. I did the cleaning after every range trip but it got old fast and I take several guns per trip.

I typically only deep clean my rifles once a year at most. It all depends on how much I shot the previous year or if I feel that I am losing accuracy. I am not against cleaning but I do not do it often.
