Yes, I know this is Rokslide and we all shoot suppressed and it’s better in every way. Believe me, I will never shoot the majority of my rifles without a suppressor again.

But humor me. With a BARE muzzle (no brake, no supp) what is the biggest cartridge/caliber where you can spot shots at ~400 yards on 10x, consistently. Assume a 9ish lb rifle setup. I know that for me, I CAN’T do it consistently with a 6.5 Creedmoor shooting 140 class bullets. Can a guy do it with the 6mms?

I can do it with 260 Remington 130 ELDM and 243 95 Berger BUT my recoil management and setup has to be perfect. I might spot every shot one day then think I’m good the next time and I’m way off target due to recoil.

Long range shooting classes have helped significantly, fundamentals focus has helped, still building repetition with correct mechanics and fundamentals. I have bad habits and learned mechanics from not being taught the long range fundamentals at a young age.

I still can’t do it every time unless I’m shooting 6 ARC 108 ELDM and smaller.

So with the 243, it’s a little tricky unless you’re all dialed in? I’ve never been able to spend time shooting that 243/6 creed from field positions, and that’s what I’m most curious about.

That's going to depend quite a bit on the stock design and the weight of the rifle.
Fair enough. I listed 9 lbs in the original question but to elaborate further, 9lb Tikka in a Stocky VG2 with a 24” barrel (bare muzzle), SHV 3-10. Biggest cartridge/ caliber where someone with mediocre fundamentals can spot hits at 400 consistently from field positions?

I can do this with a 6.5cm and 8.5lb rifle from prone but probably not other positions. But I will say that is the max recoil for me being able to. I haven’t shot a 6.5cm without a suppressor in several years and just did on Thursday this week and forgot how much the suppressor helps. Especially after shooting my suppressed 223 the 6.5cm feels like a dang magnum lol.
