A bit of a broad question, but how do you think about a bag rating (recognize these are subjective) if you are going to be in a shelter with a stove. Do you bring along a bag that is rated for the weather without the shelter or do you count on the shelter stove combo to be warmer and require less of a bag.

I bring a bag rated for the weather because I'm not going to be a slave to the woodstove. Plus if something unforeseen happens such as your tent burning down or being destroyed or whatever other bad thing that can happen, I would want a bag I can count on. Even on my winter hunts when I bring my arctic oven and woodstove I'm still bringing an adequate bag just in case and just sleep on top of it with a light blanket over me. That gives the option of crawling in a warm bag when the cold wakes me up because the stove went out.

Stoves don’t supplement bag rating... Unless you want to get up constantly to stoke the fire throughout the night.

They are a luxury item, but one worth it’s weight in gold with regards to morale and comfort.
