I bought a western mountaineering bag slightly used a few years back. Last year during a 3rd season hunt it was not holding warmth well and loft seemed flat.

can bags go bad? Will a wash bring the down back to life?

not sure how old the bag is, maybe 5-10 years..

Thanks for the help.

Also, you might want to give the sleeping bag podcast on kifarucast a listen.

I have used a WM bag every year for over 20 years 2nd season rifle and it's still going strong. Washed it twice in that time and in my opinion it will make a difference. Last year I had it done at https://bouldermtnrepair.com/ and they did a great job. Check them out on the web

I don't know where you are but Rainy Pass Repair in Seattle does a great job.You probably would have to ship it but Seattle is such a cluster ^%##@$$ I wouldn't drive there if I lived next door (I almost do )

If its down the previous owner likely stored it in its compression sack which is not good for down.
When not used they should always be stored in a larger bag like a large pillow case or just hang loose in your closet to prevent the down from getting flat.
I have also seen people selling bags and state “ i just washed it good to go”. Big red flag

It’s sad because a lot of guys use their bag once or twice a year then the rest of its life it’s stored compressed in a hot/cold garage. Not good for the bag at all.

WM gives you both a stuff sack and storage sack with every single one of their bags. Use the storage sack and it will last a long long time.
