I'm wondering what some of you guys are using or prefer for a backup tarp to carry in the pack? I don't need a massive tarp, but something that can be pitched easily and weighs very little. The Kifaru Sheep tarp looks pretty bomber and light from what I can see. I don't think I need to drop the money on a cuben type tarp at this point. I like the reinforced areas on the Kifaru. I'd like to aim at keeping weight of the tarp and cordage in the sub 14 ounce range if possible. Hilleberg has a nice looking 10x10 tarp too, but it's heavier. I'd be using this to sit and weather out a storm on the mountain or to set up around camp to get out of the elements.

I have a six moons gatewood cape. It has proven to be really good. I have since picked up the nest to go along with it. Jimmy tarps made me a 8x8. It has the reinforcement at the center for a pole so I can set it up like a mid. He also put a hang loop on the outside to hang from a tree. We put a lot of tie down loops on it to support many configurations. The only thing that might make this better would be a zipper if he could retrofit that right in...maybe??

Thanks for the ideas guys, I'll take a look at the Jimmy Tarp. I have time, so will keep researching some more and weight out the options. Live2hunt, I'd enjoy seeing what you come up with as far as size and features to get one in that weight range, that'd be nice.

Not for a 2 guy bivy, my hunt partner also has a small tarp he likes to carry. I think if I was strictly looking at a lightweight bivy, I'd just take my Cuben DuoMid. This would be a do-all type, get out of the rain for glassing setup.

I know you said that you weren't particularly looking for anything in cuben fiber but Six Moon Designs has a modified mid with a zippered door in CF that weighs 7 oz. It's called the Deschutes, uses 6 stakes and a trekking pole for the pitch and is about 12 ft.² larger then the MLD Solomid. Anyway, just another option to help confuse things. They also make it in silnylon and weighs 13 oz.

Thanks AK Troutbum, that's a pretty nice cuben setup for a pretty fair price. I'm really trying to keep this one down to a flat tarp, since they're so versatile and can be pitched anywhere in a hurry with my trekking poles.

I ended up going with a Jimmy Tarp for a backup and to 'carry' on me if needed in a pinch. I went with light weight and most important $ for me. :)
