Looking for a pack for my son. He will he 7 in January and it's time he starts to carry his own gear...nothing special, just needs to be h20 compatible, carry his lunch/snacks and a coat/sweatshirt if he has one and a little meat like Backstrap or neck meat when we're successful. Not wanting to spend a ton of money so what are my options?

My boy is 5 and runs an osprey hydrajet 15. It is plenty big for a jacket and snacks and even a small back strap. It comes with a bladder and for the price it seems like a good setup to get kids started.

My daughter used an REI youth pack from the time she turned 6 till about 10. worked great and she felt on top of the world getting to carry her own stuff! Now she's 11 and I got her an Eberelestock X3 Lowdrag pack and were moving forward

Our son (8) has a Deuter Fox 30. It is a real backpack with good belt, load lifters, nice pockets, etc.... It is highly adjustable and should accommodate a kid for several years. A positive is that hiking with a kid when they have a backpack is that they get a lot of positive encouragement on the trail from others, which can be a good boost.

I'm sure you looked it up and your list of what he would carry is realistic, but it is shocking how little a kid can carry if you look at the recommended percentages.

Pack is about $100, Amazon has them, and I think REI does too.

My 5 year old has the osprey hydra jet as well. It is a great little pack for carrying his own water and snacks. My older boy is 10 and I picked him up a Gregory youth pack that should fit him well into highschool.

I picked up a SG Krux frame/w small 3 piece belt and put my Solo bag on it for my 12-year-old son's goat hunt this year. I was kind of concerned about the belt being small enough to fit his waist as he is a pretty skinny kid but and it worked out really well for him.

Just picked up a Deuter Fox 40 for my son for his birthday coming up in January. Looks like it's going to be solid for him. He turns 7 in January as well but he's fairly big for his age. He's 4'5" so it should work nicely for him for a while.
