I have an old exo5500 and day hunt with it as well as haul heavy in it. At about 5 lbs you're not adding a lot and it can carry everything I need including a lot of May if I'm so blessed. I'll even use it deer hunting because I can fit all my late season clothes in it really easy and not be sweating when I get to my stand.

I only run short backcountry trips from a base camp. 2-3 night excursions. I carry my Kifaru with the Woodsman bag 3400-4000ci. It does what I need to set up spike camp and serves me as a day pack as well.

I run a mystery ranch pop up 28, mystery ranch selway 60L and a mystery ranch Marshall.
I use the pop up 28 for day hunts. The selway 60L for 5-day hunts and summer backpack trips with my son. The Marshall for up to15 day hunts.

I noticed you differentiated between daypack and hauler -- you not of the one pack mind set?

The only time I use my SG as my daypack, is when I've already packed camp in with it. But most of my hunting is from my base truck camp. I have no problem hauling the head with cape/rack out on the first load on my shoulders, and then bring the hauler in. And most the time that hauler is my Bull Pac, and not my SG.

The ability to haul a load out without returning to camp for your ‘hauler’ is what makes a good modern hunting pack worth it. I use a seek outside Peregrine as my primary pack. It might be a bit small if you are not a minimalist.

For those of you who hump camp in on your back, do you prefer a smaller pack to make day hunts with out of camp or do you just lug around your empty camp hauler?
I lugged around my empty camp hauler (kifaru Timberline 2) but this year i'll ditch the T2 and clip on a couple belt pouches and a cargo net and cut down weight and a ton of noise.

I go with a Kifaru Nomad 2, with a Tahr between the wings. My camp is in the Tahr and I hunt out of the Nomad. If I kill something, I put the game bags between the wings. I always use the Grab It. For a holster, I go with a drop down cowboy type that goes on the belt for my pants and hangs below the pack belt. With this setup, I can’t run any pouches or water bottles on the right side. I’ve gone with my gun in my bino harness before, but I have limitations of him much weight I want up front.

No base camp for me and absolutely no extra or redundant stuff just lay out camp where I end up. Nothing funnier than watching that guy that had it all figured out, throwing all the xtra crap out of his pack, after the first trip in . Go light go hard don’t expend energy walking back to camp.
