Can we start a category for: Navigation, mapping, GPS, compass...

Such an important skillset for our group.

Ryan, I have been thinking about writing tutorials for all the different gps/nav apps and how to best use them. Also, some Google Earth tutorials wouldn't be such a bad idea. The problem with GIS data is that there is a lot of data out there in a not very useful formats. Also, some of the better, cheaper Android apps are fairly complicated for the non-techie. It might be nice to try and get Aron to write an article or two on UTM grids and paper/compass nav. He did it in video form on Gritty Bowmen, but it might be nice if he or someone else put it in illustrated written form.

For those either nerdy or curious enough I could do an article on current and future GPS tech and what we can expect and why those living at higher latitudes (like Alaska) should look for devices with GLONASS support (most recent cell phones). I can also look into approved releasable pictures of the future GPSIII satellites on the assembly floor right now for anyone that may be interested. The assembly floor is pretty impressive and it is the first satellite assembly line that I am aware of.

We could certainly consolidate prior navigation/mapping oriented posts in one area.

It would simply be darned convenient to have all resources in one list.

Hi Ryan,

Your in box is full and will not accept PMs. Kindly advise if you will do this.

NEW FORUM SUGGESTION: Mapping, Navigation & Weather

Great place to consolidate threads for this skillset and data. We have a Forum for digiscoping... and this is more critical than that.

Your thoughts?

I'll work on it; what style would you guys prefer: blog/article style or video?
An thread written like an article with one point per post, combined with pictures and maybe videos embedded would be best to handle different kinds of learners and also to best explain each point. For some things words are not enough and you need pictures or video.

Hi Ryan-

This is still hanging... any decisions? Ask newbie hunters about their anxieties and I would bet that wilderness navigation would be near the top of the list. If not, it might be after they return from their first attempt.
