For Fly Fishing (I prefer fishing lakes):
  • 9ft 5wt 4-piece Grays GR30; I've thought about getting a 3WT, but haven't yet. I just use my refular rod as a 4-piece is plenty packable
For Spin Fishing:

  • Brookies and other small Trout:
    • Daiwa Spinmatic UL Travel Rod (4-piece) 6'
    • Pflueger President 25 with 4lb mono
  • Large Browns and Bows:
    • Eagle Claw Pack-it Spin 6'6" 4-piece medium
    • Pflueger President 30 or 35 with 8lb mono
  • I bring cheap rods because tubes to protect rods are heavy. I figured out that just getting cheap rods and replacing them as they get busted up is more economical and lighter.

I see your point but I have hiked 3 miles in to fish a stream only to realize I busted the tip off in the brush somewhere along the way.

For me the tube is piece of mind and really doesn't weigh enough for me to care about
