We’re getting ready to record a podcast on filming and photography equipment for the backcountry. I have a basic outline already but wanted to throw in some questions from here. Keeping most of it equipment oriented but I can answer some technical questions.

Jordan I'm pretty excited to listen to this one.
How do pack all the equipment around so it's protected but still goes in the pack? Are you packing in multiple lens, which ones make the cut? How are you carrying your camera around? I find if I pack it away I don't take pictures but if I have it handy my weapon is not handy? What's the best way to set up everything up when your solo? I'm super impressed impressed with some of your self filmed stuff what all are you using to make that happen? Thanks

I've found there to be a lot of resources for camera gear in the back country but there is little for resources on application of the gear in hunting scenarios, so my questions are more related to the how and not the with what gear.

How did you develop your eye for what is a good shot that would likely make the final cut?

How did you train yourself to look for composition of picture, checking audio, and using camera settings correctly for a certain shot?

How much extra time investment is there in a solo hunt to take enough footage to make a solid video?

How do you deal with sh*t lighting conditions (super bright sun, or being dark w/ no moon)?

Tips for capturing the killshot?

When are film permits required for public land?

Keeping everything powered up in two scenarios: 5+ days and very cold conditions.

Mounting systems and gear to keep the shot steady.

Microphones for good sound.

I’m just starting out (kinda) videoing my hunts. I have an old 10+ year Sony and looking to upgrade to something in the $500 to $750 range. Lightweight for backpacking into backcountry 1-2 days, likely solo hunts. Looking for quality videos/audio for a reasonable price to share with friends and family or possibly DIY YouTube productions. What setups would you recommend that I can learn and grow with.

I've filmed two of my hunts and it was not easy by any means...especially solo. I found myself not using the camera when it was packed away. I also had issues with audio in the wind, and keeping batteries charged on my colder hunts. For kill shots I found myself using the phoneskope and binos. While this, worked there has to be a better setup. So as others have mentioned I would be interested in learning about:

1) Keeping cameras accessible
2) Keeping batteries charged
3) How to capture better audio
4) DSLR, camcorder, Gopro, ect.
5) How to capture kill shots

Super zoom point and shoot, practical or not. Seems far better then a bunch of lens’s and far less bulk.

Super zoom point and shoot, practical or not. Seems far better then a bunch of lens’s and far less bulk.

Not a bad option for the style of a DSLR body but has the zoom. I’ve used the Panasonic super zoom a bit and got along well with it as a video camera. Photos weren’t the greatest compared to a DSLR but okay.
