Question about early season archery in a backcountry scenario. If you are seeing elk up high, like above timber in the early mornings, moving just into timber at day break, and vice verse in the late afternoons, would you set your camp down low and hike up to them every day, or would you camp high, but with caution as to what direction the thermals are going to be taking your scent down? Just curious what others are doing in a similar scenario?

Seeing where the elk are & where they're headed would be a good indicator of their movements, set your camp accordingly so your general wind direction doesn't head their way. Distance can come into play as well, if you're talking 3/4 mile+ then it's really a non issue under most situations. --- I hunt a lot from the Top Down, once elk are located mostly through calling I then work my way into the wind as I approach. If I'm a few hundred yards from the elk it's no big deal your wind doesn't go racing down the mountain, you have plenty of time to adjust your position.

sidenote-- get those elk in the timber & ambush them if you can find their trail of use in & out or get in to 100 yards or so & call them your way. Either way don't baby sit those elk get in their & put one down, the shorter your stay the better off you are from spreading your daily scent throughout their stomping grounds.
