Back to the drawing board for a compact stock for Tikka T3X

Like everyone said. Deep socket, wooden dowel, pvc pipe wrapped in sandpaper. Go back and forth in the channel until if fits. Did this many times with different stocks. Did it with a Tikka camo stock just a couple weeks ago for my .35 Whelen which has a barrel contour probably similar to D18. Another method that I used to finish was to tape your barrel for protection and slip a strip of sandpaper between the barrel and stock and pull back and forth so you're sanding following the contour of the barrel. Works great.

I think that is a great idea. I gave away one of mine and am keeping the other one as an emergency backup.

Also, UM has the right-handed ones for $50 each if someone doesn’t want to wait for a new one.

Talking about LOP not being that important, I cut my kids LH factory stock to 10.5" but he can shoot my Rokstok 14.5" LOP. Comb height is more important.

My shotgun is 13.5". My buddy shoots an identical shotgun with 15" LOP. We accidently used each other guns at a station one time and both cleared it. I only realized it after I shot because the action was floppier than mine.

He has been sitting behind the roughtech full sized stock for a couple days just getting a feel. I agree - his comb height needs to be adjusted - but I can tell he’s “reaching” more than looks “normal”. When I put him on the compact stock it looks way more normal/comfortable for him.

That makes sense, kind of.

When your kid grows you still have the chopped LOP to deal with.

We're all good with folded paper towels here, probably have to switch to wood or something impermeable if we do anything other than shoot sitting supported in a deer stand.

We will probably end up with some junkyard looking thing with wood screwed on and bondo, etc. but my plan right now is to hand the longer ones down to my younger kid and continue to cut cast-aside factory stocks for the older boy until he's on his LH Rokstok. I don't want to cut that and he can shoot my RH stock "just OK" right now as it is.

My youngest can crawl up on the stock of most anything and make hits from prone.

My oldest, I noticed more ‘fliers’ when she shot an adult length stock. Swapping her to a compact length stock solved the problem.

Thanks for all the reply’s, gents! When I told my son I might cut his camo stock, he lost his mind and reminded me of all the other hack jobs I’ve done around the house when remodeling - my wife still thinks I’m Chip Gaines.

I am going to get some sanding done over the next week and report back.

You can always buy another factory stock to hack on. They come up on here all the time for cheap.

What’s the update? I’m in the same boat. Looks like it just needs to be widened on the section closest to the action. Debating giving it a shot, but would love to hear about your experience

Finally able to report back - sanding the channel back and forth worked!

Took me about an hour, hour and a half total. My buddy helped me out, and we are both very meticulous and detail oriented by trade - he’s a parachute trainer (Smokejumper) and I fly drones for a living. I constantly obsess over torque - torque settings, torque wrenches, torque dreams and nightmares.

I used a 1/2” then 1” pvc wrapped with sandpaper.

Decent amount of sanding to be had but I went very slow and made sure each side had an even amount of plastic remaining/taken off.

It’s hard to tell if it’s truly free floated all the way to the recoil lug (not sure if that’s even where it’s supposed to be free floated to) so I used a piece of sketch paper and marked with a pencil how far I could slide the paper between the barrel and the stock on the rough tech stock and the compact stock. Once they were the same I stopped sanding and torqued it all down.

For me is an hour long saga filled with sweaty palms and questioning myself.

Anyways, My boy and I shot it today and it shot just as good as day 1. 3 holes touching at 100 yards.

He was quickly banging steel at 2,3, and 400 yards. He’s beyond stoked and becoming more excited for his upcoming cow elk hunt.

if I can get him on an elk successfully I just might win dad of the year. Will report back if/when successful.

Awesome update. I mean, I've hogged some stock channels out in less time than it took you to type that out, but mine aren't always pretty when I'm finished. The barrels float, though. lol.

My 'best' was a walnut R700BDL stock hogged out to float a Bartlein #3b contour.
