Temporarily off the radar!
What does everyone use to charge a phone etc in the back country? I seen a little solar deal made by brunton at walmart for resonable price but not sure of quality. Last year we used my buddies bio lite stove which work ok I'd say. Lots of burning and smoke!!! I have a jetboil and will not give it up to a bio lite. Any affordable lite recommendations?

I generally don't charge in the backcountry. I leave my phone on airplane mode and only use the GPS when absolutely necessary. I bring 6 extra AA batteries usually on longer trips. This covers the GPS and my headlamp. What exactly are you looking at charging other than a phone? You be be able to bring an extra phone battery providing you can easily change batteries in your phone.

the Power Monkey explorer worked well for me last season on my 9 day trip.load a charge onto it before going in, then the solar component worked well to recharge it after the first charge was used.

Look up minty boost - you can buy them from a website called adafruit.

I got the idea off this forum - there was a recent thread on this exact topic. The minty boost is great - weighs 37g without batteries and the amount of power you take with you is only limited by the number of AA's you carry.

I'm just looking to charge my phone. I like to use it for pics and some downtime cribbage. I was able to call my fiancé when I would get up high last year and that is very important to her to hear from me every other day or too. And I'm a firm believer or happy wife happy life!!!

I carried a New Trent and it worked well. I believe live2hunt carried the brunton. He will probly chime in about that but I was pleased with NT.

I recently bought a Goal Zero on a whim, 7w panel with a battery charger/booster. The panel works well when the sun is up and the batt pack works even better. Not lightweight, however. That NewTrent looks pretty cool. If can swap batteries you may be better off buying a couple of generic batts and bringing them along.

My was actually by axcell and it sucked. I did consider the brunton and while I would've probably been better served by the brunton, the research I did on it indicated the solar cells were inadequate to make the system very efficient. I can't personally testify to New Trent but the are the highest and most commonly recommended battery packs. Goal Zero is the best recommended solar systems but again I have no personal experience with it.
