Avery vs. JvB - Podcast Back and Forths

Think it’s funny Joseph has been hunting for a long long time all over the world and had compiled a large data set of his own. Killed lots of big African animals, elk, etc. s2h talks about data data data. But when there’s someone else with a large sample size of data out there, he’s just stupid cause his data set opposes yours? A lot of people on here just repeat or quote what’s said on the s2h podcast about small calibers so do they actually have an opinion or just repeating what they are told as well?

You need to read more threads on this site. Less talking and more photo evidence is the Rokslide way.

I read a ton of threads bud, been on here quite a while. Are there not threads out there showing or talking about the effectiveness of 7mm and 30 calls as well? I guess we should ignore those for the new fad of small calibers?

Agreed. Only time I dabble in any sort of podcast is when I have a 10+ hour drive. Have an 18 hour drive coming up to Idaho for a depredation hunt. Might checkout what this JVB thing is about.

Unless you like to fall asleep driving, I would advise to stay away from JVB. Dudes voice is so monotone and boring.

Probably ought to jump to the 416 rigby, or 408 Cheytac to make sure you’ve got enough wallop for chihuahua sized deer. Would hate to not have sever the back half from the front half on impact and drop it in place. We need somebody to do the lords work as it pertains to wallop testing, thanks for taking one for the team!

If hes so confident in his data he shouldn't have a problem sitting down and having a civil conversation about it. Im sure there are some that parrot on here but there's also PILES of objective facts in the 223 and 6mm threads that didnt come from the S2H guys.

Frankly the way Form and Avery have made it sound on here and on podcasts is that we’ve only been lucky and/or possibly irresponsible for using “big magnums” and/or monos.

I like listening to JVB cause he likes to talk about old guns, hunting different countries, huntable species, cartridges, bullets, optics, gear planning hunts, etc… We have a lot of the same interests. Conversely I love shoot2hunt, Form Fridays and Form on Exos show. It’s good content all of it. Both camps can be right surprisingly enough. And I’m willing to wager that removing bullet choice and head stamps from a conversation there’s not much either side disagrees on.

Also I did have to laugh cause on a recent episode of S2H Avery popped a joke about “authority” and then a little while later mentioned how his 6UM was spitting a 115 DTAC (a bullet he said was perfect for elk but a little stout for deer) at 3380fps like my brother that’s authoritative! That SOB is slamming & expanding like a grenade

I can’t understand how people listen to jvb. I can’t determine if it’s just the tone of his voice or the cadence in how he speaks. I’d rather listen to Barbie girl for 24 hours then a podcast of his.

I knew I wasn't the only one, but holy shit I can't stand to listen to him talk. I think it's everything you mentioned, plus the little extra bit of added pretentiousness and over the top old timey flair for good measure.

I know you’re not, I’m genuinely interested to see the necropsies. I’m squarely in the anti-magnum cartridge camp for any and all applications, but there’s something satisfying about any necropsy somebody is willing to perform and share. Especially when it deals with more “extreme” ends of the spectrum (ie small deer and big projectiles). More data > less data, especially when that data comes in photographic form and not just a story.

85 pound doe. 338 win mag, norma oryx 230gr. 70 yard shot. ~ 2700 fps impact. Exit hole shown. Bang flop, and i could see little smoke curley Q's coming out of the exit hole for a few seconds after the shot. Talk about wallop!!!

110 poind spike whitetail. 120 yard shot. 338 win mag, 230gr norma oryx, about 2700 fps impact. Bullet went from deers right to left. Deer ran about 50 yards. Clearly I need a bigger rifle.

I agree. I mean he technically sits down every week and puts out a podcast about cartridges, ballistics etc and gives his opinion on it. I would like to see a combo podcast where it’s discussed though. I think it would be very educational despite what side you’re on. But we all know Ryan is a self admitted pot stirrer and smart a$$ so I’m not sure JVB completely trusts him to keep it all the way civil I get there are definitely threads and data on the 6mm and 223 where they are killing elk. I am not discrediting that data. I’m saying there IS other data out there that contradicts and points towards larger calibers for larger animals. I think a lot of it comes down to bullet selection. If you live in a state where bullet selection is limited like California (and probably soon to be other states in the future) i think it changes things. Especially for longer range terminal performance. I listen to both podcasts and see validity in both To be honest. I fall more on the JVB side but can’t argue with what the 6mm has done with the right bullet.
