Good morning, I am thinking about doing an August Alpine deer hunt on Kodiak. I have been to Kodiak before for goats later in the year, but have never seen many deer. I am looking for an area to fly into that has access to large alpine area. Would anyone that has had experience with hunting Kodiak in August care to share any of the high alpine lakes they have flown into and what the area around it was like? I appreciate any help you can provide. Thanks.

sorry i will say alaska hunting areas tips or hints discussion is like the fight club ... good luck on your adventures ...
I know it, I lived up there for the past 7 years and have certainly experienced that first hand. I try to help out people wherever I can and since Kodiak isn’t one of those places that most people frequent every year, especially for an alpine blacktail hunt, I was hoping someone would be willing to share their experience.

the best thing to do is contact one of the air taxis they can give you places they can land based on how far you want to fly. there are many high alpine lake as options but not all the air services have pilots skilled enough to get you in and out of them.
I would suggest sea hawk air or kodiak air service as best options for identifying locations.
let me know if you have more questions

Get out OnX or a topo map and start looking. They need about 800 yards to land a plane on a lake. Figure about $900/hr for a 206 on floats with a speed of about 130 mph (include time for the return trips) and keep in mind that the higher the altitude of the lake and the further from Kodiak the more trouble they'll have determining the weather at the lake in advance and the higher the likelihood that there will be issues with dropping you off or picking you up in time.
